Author Guidelines

Scottish Studies encourages submissions of original research, in English or Gaelic, from affiliated and independent scholars worldwide. Anyone wishing to make a submission should first email the editor, Virginia Blankenhorn, directly at virginia.blankenhorn@ed.ac.uk to request a copy of the most recent Author Guidelines and Title Page form. Please do not submit your work thorough this website.

All submissions will be assessed by the editor to determine whether they meet the aims and scope of Scottish Studies. Those considered to be a good fit will be sent for peer review before determining whether they will be accepted or rejected. Note, however, that the editor may reject a submission outright if it does not meet minimum standards of quality. Before submitting, please ensure that your study design, if any, and your research argument are structured and articulated properly, and that your writing is clear and has been rigorously proofread. The title should be concise and the abstract should be able to stand on its own. This will increase the likelihood of reviewers agreeing to review the paper.

Before making a submission, you must obtain permission to publish any material included with the submission, such as photos, documents and datasets. Evidence of such permissions may be requested by the editor before publication is agreed.

All authors identified on the submission must consent to be identified as an author. Where appropriate, research should be approved by an appropriate ethics committee in accordance with the legal requirements of the study's country.

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • This submission meets the requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • This submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
  • All tables and figures have been numbered and labeled.
  • Permission has been obtained to publish all photos, datasets and other material provided with this submission.
  • Title page form has been completed, and includes information for all authors.
  • Appropriate metadata must be supplied. These are typically search-terms that will assist readers in finding your article.
  • If you have not already done so, please register with OrcID and include your OrcID number on the Title page with your submission.

Please do not submit your work through this website, as it may be overlooked if you do. Send it by email directly to the editor at virginia.blankenhorn@ed.ac.uk.
